The Story Behind Puy

Peppery, delicate and packed with heritage, Puy lentils are unlike any other lentil. Discover the volcanic soils, traditional farming methods and centuries of history that give these little green lentils their distinctive flavour and firm bite.

A Lentil Like No Other

Not all lentils are created equal.

Prized by chefs and food lovers around the world, Puy lentils are celebrated for their peppery flavour, delicate skin and ability to hold their shape when cooked. But what makes them so special isn't just their taste – it's where they come from.

The story of our Puy lentils begins in the dramatic landscape of Le Puy-en-Velay, a volcanic region in south-central France where the unique combination of soil, climate and traditional farming methods has shaped this extraordinary ingredient for centuries.

Born from Volcanic Soil

Le Puy-en-Velay sits amongst ancient volcanic peaks and rolling valleys formed millions of years ago.

The nutrient-rich volcanic soil, combined with high altitude and a naturally dry climate, creates ideal growing conditions for Puy lentils. These unique environmental factors help produce the lentils' characteristic flavour and texture, giving them the firm bite and subtle peppery notes that have made them famous.

It's a perfect example of terroir – the idea that a food's character is shaped by the place it's grown.

A Protected French Treasure

Puy lentils are one of France's most treasured ingredients and have been awarded Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status.

This means only lentils grown, harvested and packed within a defined region around Le Puy-en-Velay can be called authentic Puy Lentils. It's the same protection given to products such as Champagne and Parmigiano Reggiano, recognising the importance of place, tradition and quality.

The designation helps preserve generations of farming knowledge while ensuring every Puy lentil lives up to its reputation.

Grown with Care

Growing Puy lentils is far from straightforward.

The crop is naturally delicate and highly dependent on the weather. Farmers in the region work small plots of land, carefully rotating crops over several years to maintain soil health and biodiversity.

Many growers are part of local cooperatives, working together to protect the future of lentil farming in the region and support one another through challenging harvests.

This slower, more considered approach to farming helps safeguard both the landscape and the exceptional quality of the lentils themselves.

Supporting the Future of Farming

Today, the Le Puy region is home to around 600 farmers across 88 villages, many of whom have cultivated the land for generations.

Puy lentils play an important role in local agriculture. As a legume, they naturally help improve soil fertility, reducing the need for artificial inputs and supporting healthier long-term growing systems.

By choosing Puy lentils, you're supporting a farming tradition that celebrates biodiversity, craftsmanship and a deep connection to the land.

Why We Love Puy Lentils

Of course, all that history would mean very little if they didn't taste incredible.

Puy lentils have a distinctive peppery flavour, a delicate skin and a firm texture that holds beautifully in everything from salads and soups to curries and grain bowls. They're versatile, satisfying and packed with character – everything we look for in a great ingredient.

It's no wonder they've become a staple in kitchens around the world.
